Sept. 6th 2008 - Neither rain, nor snow, nor threat of hurricane Hanna could stop the 6th annual RI State Championships from taking place. It poured all night Friday and threatened all day Saturday but the rain held off until the last stone was on the trailer and heading home. Fourteen brave souls attended this years contest but the threat of rain and the proximity to nationals may have kept a few away. The hotly contested under 200lb class was the largest with 7 competitors. Rob Orlando from Monroe CT was the class of the field placing 1st or 2nd in every event and one of only 2 people to take the car a full 50 feet!!! David Pietrantonio gave him a run for his money, placing 2nd and having the longest tire toss of the event at 51’6”. Third place was our lone teen competitor Rob “Beef” D’agostino from Medford Ma. Look for big things to come, out of this young man. The 2nd largest class was the over 231 group with local boy “Big Matt” Leisge taking home the gold followed by Jimmy Herbst in his first strongman contest. Taking third and finally conquering the 3” bar was ristrongman.com web master Mat Bruneaux. Our lone female was Amanda Alpert who gave the car a try and saw daylight under the wheels, not bad considering it’s a 550lb VW. Special thanks go out to my scorekeeper Peter Paranzino, my spotters and loaders Jon Barlow, Jean Gardella, and Russ. I would also like to thank my lovely go-fer girl Michele who kept us running smoothly. Thanks to sponsors Intl. Pocket Café for the wings and Narragansett Beer for the cold brew you made the after party a success!!! Thanks to my other sponsors: IronMind, JFA Security, Loki Graphics, Cynthia Bruneaux Realty, and John Erik Nelson Properties.

Thanks to everyone who attended I hope you had fun!!

Quote of the contest;

A load snap is heard during an attempt at the stones... CRAP!! I broke my finger!!after making a few fists, “maybe I didn’t...the attempt continued in typical strongman fashion, throbbing hand and all.
